Bank of England to Scrap Historical Figures for Wildlife on Next Banknotes

The Bank of England has chosen wildlife—foxes, sharks, and puffins among them—to replace historical figures on its next banknote series, following a July 2025 public consultation that favored nature-themed designs. The shift moves away from honoring Winston Churchill, Jane Austen, and others featured on current notes. A second consultation in summer 2026 will determine which species appear on specific denominations. Implementation remains years away pending design and security testing.
