Google launches selfie-video account recovery

Google announced on July 23, 2026 that users can recover locked accounts by recording a short guided selfie video — performing head turns and nods — instead of relying on passwords, SMS codes, or authenticator apps. The system compares the recovery video against an enrollment clip and uses liveness checks to resist photos and deepfakes. Google has not published technical details of its deepfake detection.
