UN Resolution Urges Equal-Area Map Projections, Naming Tech Companies Directly

The UN General Assembly adopted a non-binding resolution on September 4, 2026 (164–1, U.S. opposed) urging equal-area map projections over Web Mercator, which distorts area near the poles. The resolution names technology companies directly. Equal Earth, a distortion-minimizing alternative, is already supported in PROJ, D3.js, and QGIS.
