Existing law too weak to prosecute deepfake abuse, MP tells select committee

ACT MP Laura McClure told a parliamentary select committee that police struggle to prosecute sexually explicit deepfakes under existing law because they must prove intent to cause harm. McClure said a successful prosecution earlier in 2026 required the victim's family to build the case themselves. Her bill, now before the committee, would make non-consensual deepfakes illegal without that threshold.
