Moderna and Korea University Launch mRNA Hantavirus Vaccine, Signaling Shift from Pandemic to Endemic Disease
Moderna and Korea University's Vaccine Innovation Center announced a collaboration in July 2024 to develop an mRNA-based hantavirus vaccine, marking the technology's expansion beyond COVID-19 into endemic regional pathogens. Hantaan Virus causes hemorrhagic fever primarily in East Asia. The partnership leverages preclinical data showing mRNA candidates generate stronger T-cell responses than traditional inactivated vaccines in mice, while combining Moderna's manufacturing and regulatory infrastructure with Korea University's regional disease expertise.
