Texas was scheduled to execute Jamaal Howard on Oct. 7 by lethal injection and planned to use pentobarbital, the same drug used when Tennessee's attempt on Christa Pike failed the prior week. It would be the first U.S. execution since then. Howard's lawyers sought a halt over similar risks; a Texas court denied the request.
