Indonesia's Peatland Fires Send Toxic Haze Across Four Countries, AQI Hits 1,000

Haze from Indonesia's peatland fires has spread across Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, and Indonesia, producing the region's worst transboundary haze crisis in over a decade. Air quality in parts of Indonesia reached an AQI of 1,000. The fires, fueled by a "Super El Niño" and driven largely by palm oil land clearing, have already released an estimated 58 million tonnes of carbon. Two volunteer firefighters have died.
