Artificial Lake Risks Breaching, Threatening Second Flood on Nepal-Tibet Border

An artificial lake formed by debris damming the Bhotekoshi River risks breaching, Chinese and Nepalese authorities warned on August 27–28, 2026. Xinhua reported inflows could reach 3 million cubic meters over three days amid continued rainfall, threatening Gyirong Port and downstream areas with a second flood. The warning comes as the initial glacier-collapse flood has killed 469 and left over 1,300 missing.
