Government unveils first wave of £39bn social homes programme: 70,000 homes across England

The UK government has allocated the first wave of its £39bn Social and Affordable Homes Programme: £10bn for 70,000 homes outside London and at least £6bn through the Greater London Authority, with about 60% for social rent. Shelter said the announcement was "not near the level we need." Just 12,000 social-rent homes were built in England in 2024-25.
