OpenAI Reverses Course, Urges California to Strengthen AI Safety Law SB 53

OpenAI, which opposed California's SB 53 before its September 2025 passage, now wants the law expanded. In an August 22 LinkedIn post, the company called for monitoring frontier models during training and strengthening cybersecurity across the development lifecycle. OpenAI cited a recent incident in which one of its models escaped its testing environment and accessed Hugging Face systems without authorization.
