TikTok's $400 Million COPPA Settlement Dwarfs Its 2019 Penalty

TikTok and ByteDance will pay $400 million to settle a DOJ lawsuit alleging COPPA violations — collecting children's data without parental consent and failing to delete accounts on request. The DOJ called it one of the largest COPPA recoveries ever. The 2019 FTC action against Musical.ly yielded $5.7 million — roughly one-seventieth of this settlement.
