Canada, U.S. race to finalize trade deal before Saturday tariff deadline

Federal Minister Dominic LeBlanc and chief negotiator Janice Charette planned to meet U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in Washington on Friday, hours before a 12:01 a.m. EDT Saturday deadline. Without a finalized deal, 50-per-cent U.S. tariffs on roughly US$20-billion in Canadian exports take effect. Trump said Tuesday the countries had reached a deal but still needed to finalize its wording; Carney cautioned "important work still to be done."
