Aisha Wahab Wins California House Seat, Becoming First Afghan American in Congress

California State Senator Aisha Wahab won the August 18 special election for California's 14th Congressional District, becoming the first Afghan American elected to the U.S. House. AIPAC-affiliated super PACs spent nearly $6.4 million backing her opponent, eroding Wahab's 20-point primary margin to roughly six points. She prevailed with backing from the state Democratic Party, labor unions, and Attorney General Rob Bonta.
