Compassionate early super withdrawals hit $1.4bn, nearly double two years ago

ATO data shows 63,300 Australians withdrew $1.4bn from superannuation early on compassionate grounds in 2024-25, up 40% on the prior year and nearly double the $762m accessed in 2022-23. The vast majority were for medical treatment. The surge comes as One Nation pushes to loosen access rules and Labor vows to defend the $4.4tn retirement savings system.
