Labor's gambling ad opt-out register leaves ads on by default

On 17 August 2026 the Albanese government introduced a national wagering advertising opt-out register, administered by ACMA and funded by a levy on licensed wagering providers. The register lets individuals opt out of gambling ads in one place. But ads stay on by default. Some Labor and Liberal MPs, and the Greens, had wanted a full ban or opt-in model — the government chose neither. The package also restricts inducements and targets social media influencers. The Coalition has not publicly committed support. Passage was expected by week's end.
