Canada races to close phase-one trade deal before Aug. 19 U.S. tariff deadline
Canada and the U.S. are working to finalize a phase-one trade agreement before Aug. 19, when a new round of threatened U.S. tariffs takes effect. According to three Canadian and one U.S. source, Canada would receive tariff reductions in exchange for concessions on American demands, including critical minerals and F-35 purchases. Minister Dominic LeBlanc and chief negotiator Janice Charette are steering the Canadian side.
