DRC Ebola Outbreak Becomes Fastest-Moving on Record, WHO Warns It May Surpass 2014–2016 Crisis
As of August 2026, the DRC's 17th Ebola outbreak has killed over 2,000 of 4,449 recorded cases — the fastest-moving outbreak on record. WHO says it is spreading faster than authorities can contain it and may eclipse the 2014–2016 West Africa crisis, which killed at least 11,300. No vaccine exists for the Bundibugyo strain involved. WHO projects six to twelve months before the outbreak peaks.
