Liberal senator Andrew Bragg told ABC Radio National on 13 August 2026 that lower-income Australians should "definitely" accept substandard housing to lift dwelling numbers. His Press Club plan to slash the construction code to 80 pages would drop energy efficiency and accessibility standards. Advocacy groups including Acoss and Everybody's Home warned it would let developers cut corners on basic liveability.
