At least three elderly or incapacitated British long-term residents in Sweden — including 74-year-old Horace Mason, given until 20 August to leave, and 78-year-old Joyce Thomas — face deportation over missed post-Brexit residence-permit paperwork. Kathleen Poole, another British woman with Alzheimer's, was threatened with removal in 2023 before dying in a Swedish care home. Sweden's migration courts are applying humanitarian exceptions narrowly, treating advanced dementia and decades of residence as insufficient grounds to stay.
