OpenAI said ChatGPT's climb from 900 million to 1 billion weekly active users over five months constituted a slowdown — a rare public concession that adoption may be flattening. Google's Gemini, also at 1 billion monthly users as of August 11, grew from 400 million to 1 billion in roughly a year and is still compounding. The metrics are not directly comparable: Gemini's count includes Android preinstalls.
