Framework's ARM Motherboard Opens Laptop Platform to Non-x86 Processors
MetaComputing has released an ARM-based motherboard for Framework Laptop 13, featuring a CIX P1 12-core processor with Linux support—the platform's first non-x86 option. Priced at $549 for a 16GB/1TB configuration, it demonstrates that Framework's modular architecture can accommodate processor families beyond Intel and AMD. The development signals third-party extensibility: users can now mix processor architectures while reusing the same chassis, display, and expansion modules. This approach directly contrasts with industry norms of sealed hardware, enabling customers to transition between x86 and ARM without replacing peripherals or losing upgradability.
