news.com.au: australia's biggest free news site
By News Corp Australia (News Digital Media)
Australia's biggest free commercial news site by a wide margin: News Corp Australia's portfolio topped the Ipsos iris News category for all 12 months of 2025, and news.com.au alone drew roughly 12.31 million monthly unique visitors and 344 million page views in December 2025. It dominates news video — 62.1% of all category video views, about four times its nearest rival — with dedicated NRL, AFL, UFC and F1 coverage, and it draws on News Corp Australia's national masthead network for genuine state-by-state breaking news. The app carries a 4.4-star App Store average and a 4.56-star Play Store average, both checked September 2026.
Where it falls down
In July 2025 the app was rebuilt around a TikTok-style vertical swipe/video feed that its own publisher describes as built for "the same endless scrolling as social media platforms like Tiktok" — and it's working exactly as intended: News Corp Australia's managing director of its free-news division says app users are now 10x more engaged than web users, with daily in-app ad revenue up 15x since. There's no reading-level option anywhere in the app, and named, dated App Store reviews describe ads making stories freeze or become unreadable, plus recurring complaints about sensationalized headlines and declining editorial quality.
- Pick it if: You want Australia's biggest free news site, dominant sport and video coverage, and don't mind an ad-funded feed built to keep you scrolling.
- Skip it if: You want a story rewritten at a level that fits you, a feed that's actually done in five minutes, or a feed with no ads in it at all.
