Cookie Notice
Last updated: May 9, 2026
This website does not use cookies — for tracking, analytics, advertising, personalisation, or any other purpose. We have deliberately built Brief's public websites (gobrief.app and thebrief.news) so that visiting them sets no cookies on your browser. This notice explains what that means in practice and covers the limited cases where cookies could still appear, outside of our direct control, for strictly technical reasons.
What is a cookie?
A cookie is a small piece of data that a website asks your browser to store and send back on later visits. Cookies are commonly used to keep you signed in, remember preferences, or track behaviour across sessions and sites. In this notice we use "cookies" loosely to also include similar browser-based storage such as localStorage and sessionStorage, since data-protection laws like the EU ePrivacy Directive and the UK PECR treat them in much the same way.
Cookies we set: none
Brief does not set any first-party cookies on gobrief.app or thebrief.news. In particular, we do not use:
- Strictly necessary cookies — we have no login, no shopping cart, and no server-side session on the marketing site, so none are required.
- Preference cookies — we do not store language, theme, or layout choices in cookies. Theme is resolved at render time only.
- Analytics cookies— see "Analytics without cookies" below.
- Advertising or marketing cookies — we do not run ads on the website and do not share your data with ad networks.
Because we set no cookies, your browser's cookie controls (block, clear, reject third-party cookies) have no effect on this site — there is nothing to block or clear.
Analytics without cookies
We do measure how the website is used — what we read in aggregate helps us improve it. Both of the tools we use for this are configured to be cookieless.
PostHog (product analytics)
We use PostHog to understand which pages and features are useful. Our PostHog client is configured with persistence: "memory", which means it keeps state only in the page's JavaScript memory for the duration of your visit. No cookies are written. No localStorage or sessionStorage entries are written. When you close the tab, the in-memory state is gone. Events are sent to PostHog through a first-party proxy at /ingest on this domain so that no third-party requests are made from your browser to posthog.com directly.
Vercel Analytics (aggregate traffic)
Our hosting provider, Vercel, offers a privacy-first analytics product that we enable in production for aggregate page-view counts. Vercel Analytics is cookieless by design: it does not store any client-side identifier and uses a short-lived anonymised hash that resets daily. It cannot follow you across days or across sites.
Hosting and infrastructure
The website is served by Vercel. In our current configuration Vercel does not set any cookies on visitors of this site. We do not use Vercel features that introduce cookies (such as Skew Protection, the Vercel Toolbar in production, or Speed Insights), and we do not have any custom server middleware that issues cookies.
In rare cases an infrastructure provider may set a strictly necessary cookie that is not under our application's control — for example, to mitigate denial-of-service attacks, to verify that a request is coming from a real browser, or to keep a deploy consistent during a rollout. Such a cookie would exist solely to deliver the website to you safely; it would not be used to identify you, profile you, or follow you across sites. If our infrastructure starts setting cookies on a routine basis, we will update this notice.
Mobile app
This Cookie Notice covers the Brief website. Our iOS and Android applications do not use web cookies; their data handling is described in our Privacy Policy.
Your privacy controls
We honour the Global Privacy Control signal as described in our Privacy Policy. Because we set no cookies, no separate consent banner or cookie preference centre is required on this site under GDPR, the UK GDPR, the EU ePrivacy Directive, or US state privacy laws such as the CCPA.
Changes to this notice
If our cookie practices change, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, for material changes, post a notice on the site.
