Go Brief vs Ground News: five minutes, or the full audit?

Ground News exists to answer one question: who is covering this story, and how are they framing it. Its bias, factuality and ownership ratings, and its Blindspot feed of stories one side is barely touching, are built for a reader who wants to audit the coverage — not skim it.

Go Brief is built for a different question: what happened today, explained at a level that actually fits you, finished in about five minutes. Some readers want both jobs done by different apps. This page is for the ones deciding between them — where each one wins, where it doesn’t, and what each actually costs.

Before you read a word of it: who wrote this, and why.

  • We make Go Brief. Ground News is somebody else's product, reviewed the same way we'd want ours reviewed. If you only take one thing from this page: the head-to-head below names four jobs Ground News wins outright.

  • Both apps get a stated weakness. In the same voice. An app you can't criticise is an app the writer hasn't used — and that includes ours.

  • Nothing here is unverifiable. Every number carries its source and the date it was checked (see Method, below) — checked in August 2026.

  • Nobody paid to be here. No affiliate link, no sponsored placement. Ground News didn't ask for this page and didn't see it before it published.

Side by side

Go Brief vs Ground News, fact by fact.

Most rows below don’t have a winner, on purpose — two apps built for different jobs shouldn’t score identically on every axis, and a table that pretended otherwise would be doing marketing, not comparison.

Go Brief compared with Ground News on nine facts: what each is best for, how it ends, what pays for it, its price, reading level, content model, platforms, notifications and App Store rating, as of August 2026.

Auditing how outlets are covering a storyGround NewsEvery article on Ground News carries a bias, factuality and ownership rating, and the Blindspot feed surfaces stories one side of the spectrum has barely touched. Go Brief doesn't rate outlets at all.

Ground News: auditing bias

By Snapwise Inc. — founders Harleen Kaur and Sukh Singh

Nothing here comes close for one specific question: who is covering this, and how are they framing it. Every outlet carries a bias, factuality and ownership rating, and the Blindspot feed surfaces stories one side of the spectrum has barely touched. Ground News aggregates close to 60,000 articles a day from more than 50,000 sources, reached #1 on Apple's US free news chart in spring 2025, and in the first half of 2025 was YouTube's single most-sponsored brand by view count — 1,863 creator integrations and 664 million views (Axios, October 2025) — on a company that says it has taken no institutional funding.

Where it falls down

Ground News doesn't write anything — it aggregates and rates articles other outlets already published, so there's no rewriting for reading level and no designed finish line, just a research tool you dip into. The parts that are actually differentiated sit behind a paywall: the free tier is headlines and basic bias tags, while the unlimited Blindspot feed and the factuality ratings that are the real pitch need Premium or Vantage. A September 2025 Columbia Journalism Review investigation went further, reporting that Ground News's bias ratings are licensed from AllSides, Media Bias/Fact Check and Ad Fontes Media rather than produced independently — and that AllSides' own COO says Ground News uses its data without a formal agreement or compensation, while Media Bias/Fact Check likewise has no agreement with the company (Ground News does pay for its Ad Fontes ratings). The same investigation cited a study in which only one of four tested Blindspot stories measurably shifted a reader's views.

  • Skip it if: You want to be finished in five minutes, or a free tier that isn't a preview of the paid one.

Go Brief: finishing in five minutes

By Go Brief — us

Go Brief is built to be finished, not audited. Pick six categories and the sub-topics under them, set the order, choose when Your Daily Brief lands, and read a set of bite-size story cards written from real, sourced reporting. Every story is written at the level you set for that topic — Beginner to Expert — and Ask Brief answers follow-up questions from the reporting behind it. Then it ends: no bias chart to read, no second tab to open, no subscription to weigh.

Where it falls down

There's no way to see how ten outlets framed the same story, and no per-outlet bias or ownership rating — if auditing coverage across the spectrum is the job, Ground News does it and Go Brief doesn't. There's also no local news, and breaking alerts stay off until you ask for them. We're new enough that there isn't yet a rating average with the weight of reviews behind it to be worth quoting.

  • Pick it if: You want to be caught up in about five minutes, at a reading level that actually fits you, then put the phone down.
  • Skip it if: You want to compare how different outlets covered the same story, or you specifically want local news.

How this was compared.

  • What we compared. What each app is genuinely built for, whether the reading has a designed end, what pays for it, what it costs, whether it rewrites a story or just rates the coverage, and how each has actually performed — ratings, reach, press.

  • Where the facts came from. Ground News's own about page, its App Store listing, and independent reporting — named and linked below, checked in August 2026. Go Brief's facts come from the same dossier used on /best-news-app, so the two pages can't quietly disagree about our own product.

  • What we didn't do. No score, no star rating for the comparison itself. We didn't invent a session-length figure for Ground News either — no public source publishes one, so the point is argued from its paywall structure instead, which is documented.

  • What would change it. Prices move and both apps ship features; the date above is when this was last checked. Tell us if something's gone stale and we'll fix the page.

Questions

What people ask before picking one.

Is Ground News better than Go Brief?

They're not doing the same job, so "better" depends which one you came for. Ground News is the better pick if you want to audit how different outlets are framing a story — bias, factuality and ownership ratings are its whole product. Go Brief is the better pick if you want to be genuinely caught up in about five minutes, at a reading level that fits you, then put the phone down.

Is Ground News free?

There's a free tier — aggregated headlines from its 50,000+ sources and basic bias tags. The features Ground News is actually known for, the unlimited Blindspot feed and the factuality ratings, sit behind paid tiers: Pro at $0.99/mo, Premium at roughly $3.49–3.99/mo, or Vantage at $9.99/mo. Go Brief's whole daily brief, including Ask Brief, is free with no paywall at any tier.

Is Ground News worth paying for?

If auditing media bias is specifically the job, yes — Premium and Vantage unlock the features that make Ground News worth having. If you just want a quick daily catch-up, it's the wrong purchase: Go Brief does that job for free.

Is Ground News biased?

Independent rater Media Bias/Fact Check rates Ground News itself "Least Biased" with a "Mostly Factual" record. The better-documented critique isn't about political slant — a September 2025 Columbia Journalism Review investigation reported that Ground News licenses its bias and factuality ratings from AllSides, Media Bias/Fact Check and Ad Fontes Media rather than rating outlets independently, and that AllSides says its data is used without a formal agreement.

What is Ground News used for?

Comparing how different outlets covered the same story. Its Blindspot feed and per-outlet bias, factuality and ownership ratings are built for a reader who wants to see the political spectrum's full coverage of one event — not for a quick daily summary.

How much does Ground News cost?

Free tier, plus Pro at $0.99/mo ($9.99/yr), Premium at roughly $3.49–3.99/mo (about $29.99–44.99/yr, depending on region and promotion) and Vantage at $9.99/mo ($99.99/yr), per its App Store listing checked in August 2026.

What's a good alternative to Ground News?

Depends what you actually want from it. If the draw is a fast, level-adjusted daily catch-up rather than a bias-auditing tool, Go Brief is built for exactly that trade. If you want a free way to compare political framing instead of a paid one, AllSides — one of the raters Ground News itself licenses from — covers similar ground on the web.

Does Go Brief rate media bias the way Ground News does?

No — Go Brief doesn't publish bias, factuality or ownership ratings for outlets. It rewrites stories from real, sourced reporting at the reading level you choose, and stays out of scoring who covered a story best. If per-outlet bias auditing is the job, Ground News is built for it and Go Brief isn't.
