India's Strategic Port Project in Southeast Asia
India is building a major port, airport, and township on Great Nicobar Island in the Andaman Sea—territory just 90 kilometers from key shipping lanes. The project covers 131 square kilometers of forest and includes a container port, power plant, and residential area. Since 2020, India's planning agency has coordinated the initiative, with government backing signaling serious momentum toward strengthening India's maritime presence in Southeast Asia.
