First U.S. Case of Argentine Hantavirus Contained

The CDC confirmed the first U.S. case of Andes virus—a hantavirus strain that spreads through close contact with bodily fluids—in a Delaware patient in February 2018 who had traveled to Argentina and Chile. Two high-risk contacts were traced. Neither developed infection, demonstrating that standard public health protocols can effectively prevent transmission of this strain.
