South China Sea Clash Injures Philippine Sailor; US Reaffirms Defense Pact

A July 20 clash at disputed Second Thomas Shoal left a Philippine sailor injured after a Chinese coastguard member struck him with a baton, Manila said. Beijing claimed Philippine vessels rammed its patrol boat. Secretary of State Rubio reaffirmed the US-Philippines mutual defense treaty, pledging Washington would "live up to" its obligations.
