Sarwar Exits Scottish Labour Role for Burnham Cabinet — Via Lords Seat He Once Condemned

Anas Sarwar quit as Scottish Labour leader in July 2026 to join PM Andy Burnham's business and trade department. Burnham will appoint him to the House of Lords — the unelected upper chamber Sarwar called "unacceptable" in 2022. The SNP accused him of lying; the Scottish Greens branded him a "chancer." Sarwar was the first senior Labour figure to urge Starmer's resignation.
