Japan logs first-ever 40°C heat day under new JMA category

On July 21, 2026, Japan recorded its first "kokushobi" — a category the Japan Meteorological Agency created in April 2026 for days hitting 40°C or above. Toyota (40.1°C) and Gujo (40°C) set all-time station records; Tajimi also reached 40°C. JMA adopted the tier after such readings became frequent enough to deserve their own label. Life-threatening heat was forecast to continue past July 22.
