Researchers at Carnegie Mellon, MIT, Oxford, and UCLA tested hundreds of participants on math and reading tasks with and without AI help. When AI was withdrawn, people were significantly more likely to quit or answer incorrectly. The effect held across different task types, suggesting AI assistance may boost short-term productivity while weakening sustained problem-solving ability.
