Purdue Team Nears Nikumaroro to Check Possible Earhart Wreck

Seventeen researchers from Purdue University and the Archaeological Legacy Institute are sailing to Nikumaroro Island aboard the Marin Mainiku, due by Monday. They will examine the Taraia Object, a possible piece of Amelia Earhart's lost 1937 plane. If confirmed, a full dig is planned next year, though earlier searches around the atoll — a ring-shaped island — found nothing.
