Purdue-led team nears Nikumaroro to check possible Earhart wreckage
Seventeen researchers from Purdue University and the Archaeological Legacy Institute are sailing aboard the Marin Mainiku to Nikumaroro Island to inspect the Taraia Object as possible wreckage from Amelia Earhart's 1937 flight. Arrival is expected by Monday. The team plans a full excavation next year if confirmed, but past searches near the atoll have failed.
