Google tests AI chip in orbit with first Suncatcher satellite

Google launched its first Project Suncatcher prototype satellite on October 1, 2026, on a SpaceX Falcon 9 from California. Built by Planet Labs, it carries a Tensor Processing Unit — Google's custom chip for AI calculations — to trial computing in orbit. After initial checks, it will run the chip in 15-minute bursts to control power use and heat.
