England and Wales to Release 2,000 Prisoners Early as Prisons Fill

About 2,000 prisoners in England and Wales, including people convicted of domestic abuse and violent crimes, will be released early starting 1 October 2026. The releases, allowed under the 2026 Sentencing Act, are meant to reduce overcrowding. Several hundred will leave on the first day from dozens of prisons over the coming month.
