2,000 offenders due for early release in England and Wales to ease overcrowding

About 2,000 offenders, including domestic abusers and violent offenders, are due for early release over the next month across England and Wales starting 1 October 2026. The releases under the 2026 Sentencing Act aim to ease prison overcrowding. Several hundred will leave on the first day, across dozens of prisons.
