Why 2,000 People Will Leave Prison Early in England and Wales

About 2,000 people in prison in England and Wales will be let out early starting 1 October 2026. The group includes people convicted of hurting partners at home and other violent crimes. A new law, the 2026 Sentencing Act, allows it to free up packed prison space. Several hundred leave day one, from dozens of prisons, over one month.
