U.S. Withdraws All Troops From Iraq, Ending Anti-Islamic State Mission

All U.S. troops have left Iraq, the military announced Sept. 30, 2026. The exit ends the post-2014 campaign against the Islamic State group — a violent extremist movement — following the 2003 invasion that removed Saddam Hussein and a 2011 pullout. Whether the U.S. will keep advising or supporting Iraq from outside is still unclear.
