Swiss Voters Reject Bid to Enshrine Strict Neutrality

Swiss voters decisively rejected the 'Safeguard Swiss neutrality' initiative on 27 September 2026, an SRG/GFS Bern election-day projection showed, with about 71% opposed and 29% in favour. The proposal would have written neutrality as "perpetual and armed" — always neutral and defended by force — into the constitution. The government, parliament and nearly all major parties opposed it.
