Treasury: 250,000 young Australians locked out since 1981

Treasury says 250,000 more Australians aged 25 to 34 would own a home if ownership rates had held at 1981 levels. The 2026 Intergenerational Report says 80 to 90% of investor lending — loans to landlords — since 2019 went to existing homes, not new builds. Canberra promised plenty. The money didn't build.
