Treasury says 250,000 more Aussies aged 25 to 34 would own a home if buying was as common as in 1981. Its 2026 Intergenerational Report — a big stocktake of Australia's future — found 80 to 90% of loans to property investors since 2019 bought old houses, not new ones. Plenty of Canberra promises. The money didn't build.
