Treasury says 250,000 young Australians miss out as ownership slides since 1981
Treasury says an extra 250,000 Australians aged 25 to 34 would own their home if ownership rates had stayed at 1981 levels. The 2026 Intergenerational Report finds 80 to 90% of investor lending since 2019 bought existing homes, not new ones. Plenty of housing promises in Canberra. The money didn't build.
