UN "Correct the Map" Resolution Names Tech Companies, Putting Web Mercator Under Diplomatic Scrutiny
On September 4, 2026, the UN General Assembly adopted the non-binding "Correct the Map" resolution (164–1, U.S. opposed), urging governments, schools, and technology companies to adopt equal-area projections. The resolution explicitly names the tech sector — a rare move — placing platforms' default Web Mercator projection under diplomatic scrutiny. Equal Earth, cited as an alternative, is already supported in PROJ, D3.js, and QGIS.
