Volcanic Ash from Anak Krakatau Shuts Eight Indonesian Airports

Anak Krakatau erupted on 5–6 September 2026, sending ash 15 km above Java and Sumatra. Indonesia closed eight airports, including Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta, because volcanic ash can damage jet engines and scratch windscreens. Lava and booming sounds were heard 700 km away. The disruption stranded over 22,000 passengers and cancelled 209 flights to Singapore, Doha, Sydney, and Kuala Lumpur.
