King Harald V dies at 89; Crown Prince Haakon accedes as King Haakon VIII

King Harald V of Norway died at Rikshospitalet in Oslo on 28 August 2026 at 06:35, aged 89, after a 35-year reign. His son Crown Prince Haakon acceded immediately as King Haakon VIII. On 29 August the new king delivered his first national address, a memorial speech broadcast at 19:00 from the Hall of Mirrors at the Royal Palace in Oslo.
