Statins Cut First Heart Attack or Stroke Risk by 30% in Adults Over 70
A double-blind, randomised trial of nearly 10,000 adults over 70 — STAREE — found daily statins reduced first major cardiovascular events by 30%, with low serious side-effect risk. One event was prevented per 37 treated over six years. Results appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine. The study population was almost exclusively white, limiting generalisability to other groups.
