China orders artists out of Gwangju Biennale over "Taiwan Pavilion" name

China's ambassador to South Korea ordered all Chinese artists to withdraw from the 16th Gwangju Biennale after the Gwangju Biennale Foundation approved the name "Taiwan Pavilion" for Taiwanese exhibitors, ARTnews reported on 28 August 2026. The foundation had reversed an earlier renaming that Taiwanese artists called "political censorship" in a 16 August statement on e-flux.
