Villa lost record scorer Ollie Watkins — who refused to play at Brighton and joined Al-Hilal for £50m — goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, close to Chelsea, and defender Ezri Konsa. In come Leon Goretzka from Bayern Munich, goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from Parma, and Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea for up to £65m. The Jackson and Mbaye deals were not yet confirmed as of August 28.
