Peer-reviewed studies contradict industry and government denials of industrial damage to Australia's Murujuga rock art

A government-funded research program, MRAMP, reported in August 2026 that historic sulfur emissions likely damaged the up to 50,000-year-old Murujuga petroglyphs in Western Australia. A March 2026 Scientific Reports (Nature) study reached similar conclusions. Industry and government had claimed no peer-reviewed evidence of such impact exists, according to a 2024 Taylor & Francis article.
