Trump's Section 338 Tariffs Push U.S. Duty on Canadian Goods to 6.9%

President Trump used Section 338 of the Trade Act of 1930 to impose 50 percent tariffs on Canadian imports starting August 19, 2026, covering about 5 percent of Canada's U.S. exports. Oxford Economics estimates the effective U.S. tariff rate on Canadian goods rose from 5.1 percent to 6.9 percent. Canada's counter-tariffs take effect September 8 after bilateral talks failed.
