U.S. Drops Syria from State Sponsors of Terrorism List After Nearly Five Decades
The U.S. rescinded Syria's State Sponsor of Terrorism designation on August 24, 2026, ending a label held since 1979. The change takes effect after a 45-day congressional review. It caps a 15-month sanctions rollback begun by President Trump in May 2025. OFAC, the Treasury's sanctions office, now lists Syria sanctions as inactive and archived.
